Wonder Woman Game Cancelled, Three Studios Shuttered
Development on the Wonder Woman video game that was under Monolith Games has been cancelled, resulting in the closure of three studios, Monolith being one of the victims.
Wonder Woman is no more. Her last video game appearances include Suicide Squad and Multiversus.
Another day, another cancellation. When we last heard of the Wonder Woman game being developed by Monolith Productions, it was not good news. But at least it was still in development. That’s not the case any more, however. But it’s not just the project that is affected, as Monolith are being shut down, alongside two other studios.
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier broke the news, prompting Warner Bros Games to confirm the information in a statement to Kotaku. WB Games has announced the closure of Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego in an effort to get its game business “back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.” This ends a partnership that has been ongoing for over 20 years since WB Games acquired Monolith back in 2004.
WB Games have been struggling financially in recent years with the flop of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League last year and sinking $100 million into Wonder Woman before taking the game back to formula recently. In a bid to try and stem the tide of money losses, WB have confirmed they want to focus on their key franchises, namely Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and… Game of Thrones? They may be a little later with that last one.
Sadly the closure of Monolith also results in the loss of their fabled Nemesis System that helped their Middle-earth: Shadow of series of games stick in the minds of players. Giving enemies the player character previously bested a chance at revenge after time improving their abilities, the Nemesis System was loved by fans. So much so that WB Games wanted to prevent other developers from copying their homework, leading them to patent the system. With Monolith’s closure, the Nemesis System is locked behind a patent-wall that doesn’t expire until 2036. It’s unclear if WB will try and shoehorn the system into another series under a different developer.
How do you feel about the newest round of layoffs? Sound off in the comments.
I created this website as I feel the state of the games industry and games reporting as a whole has gotten overly negative and full of clickbait. While I understand both of these are a great way to generate engagement, it’s a detriment to those gamers (like myself) that are just trying to enjoy games and not have to worry about the negativity of the current state of the gaming industry. I want a space where gamers can come for unbiased news that doesn’t rely on clickbait or rumours with a dash of humour and have the opportunity to share their passion for games.
