Could Resident Evil 5 Be Getting A Current-Gen Release?

Like the zombies the series started out with, Resident Evil 5 just doesn’t seem to die. There’s currently speculation that the first co-op mainline Resident Evil could be coming to current-gen hardware.

Could we be returning to Africa to stop the expansion of the bioweapons threat?

If a rating on the Entertainment Software Rating Board is to be believed, Resident Evil 5 could be making its way to Xbox Series X|S. The first mainline co-op Resident Evil game was released back in 2009 to generally favourable reviews, though it wasn’t received as well as its predecessor. The ESRB rating doesn’t share much information about what else we can expect from a possible new release, only giving a short description on the game itself. However, the only platform listed for the game is Xbox Series consoles with the PlayStation 5 surprisingly absent.

While it remains to be seen if Resident Evil 5 comes to current-gen consoles (console?), the fact that it could be skipping PS5 is a little surprising. We don’t currently know if it is a remaster, remake, or re-release, and it wasn’t an Xbox exclusive at launch. Capcom has generally had a stellar working relationship with Sony, so this could just be a place-holder rating for a new version of Resident Evil 5.

It should be noted that there’s been nothing announced on any of Capcom’s official channels. After the release of the Resident Evil 4 remake back in 2023, rumours were abound on what would be next for the franchise. Fans originally figured the next chronological game in the series, Resident Evil: Code Veronica would be slated after the Resident Evil 3 remake released. When that didn’t happen, fans speculated that it would be coming after the RE4make. Now it seems that also might not be happening as rumours have been pointing to a remake of Resident Evil 5 instead. It seems strange for Capcom to pass over a mainline title in their plans to remake the franchise’s earlier titles for modern systems.

Resident Evil 5 has been re-released and ported to multiple systems over the course of its lifespan, and this may be another port instead. It wasn’t as popular as RE4, but I have poured hundreds of hours into Resident Evil 5 across pretty much every release on multiple platforms. As a fan of the franchise for my whole gaming life, I will definitely pick up any form of Resident Evil 5 for more hours, but I would love a remake. How about you? Sound off below!

I created this website as I feel the state of the games industry and games reporting as a whole has gotten overly negative and full of clickbait. While I understand both of these are a great way to generate engagement, it’s a detriment to those gamers (like myself) that are just trying to enjoy games and not have to worry about the negativity of the current state of the gaming industry. I want a space where gamers can come for unbiased news that doesn’t rely on clickbait or rumours with a dash of humour and have the opportunity to share their passion for games.
