Crysis 4 Suffers Development Delay As Layoffs Begin
We’ve received word that Crytek is laying off a number of staff and work on Crysis 4 is placed on hold due to financial instability.
It seems there’s been some trouble over at Crytek lately as it has been confirmed that development on Crysis 4 has been put on hold and layoffs were announced. The game was revealed back in 2022 and the developers have been radio silent on it until now. The first update after announcing the game and it’s not a good one.
Crytek has announced that development on Crysis 4 has actually been on hold since Quarter 3 of 2024 (sometime between April and June) but only shared that update alongside the new of layoffs. So not only has the game been put on hold indefinitely, but Crytek plans to lay off around 60 employees from across its core development and shared services teams, including those working on Crysis 4 and other titles.
Sharing a JPEG of Doom over on Twitter, Crytek said “Like so many of our peers, we aren’t immune to the complex, unfavorable market dynamics that have hit our industry these past several years. It pains us greatly to share today that we must lay off an estimated 15% of our around 400 employees. The layoffs affect development teams and shared services. This has not been an easy decision to make, as we deeply appreciate the hard work of our talented teams.”
“After putting the next Crysis on hold in Q3, 2024,” the post continues, “we have been trying to shift developers over to Hunt: Showdown 1896.” While it is good that they are doing whatever they can to accommodate the developers affected, the fact remains that a number of staff will be joining the ever-growing list of video game developers laid off in recent years.
Needless to say, layoffs in the industry are always terrible to hear, especially with the number increasing every year. There are always ways to keep staff employed and work on projects ongoing, but most heads choose to lay off their staff instead. While it’s a shame that Crysis 4 has been shelved, it hasn’t been cancelled outright. Fingers crossed the heads at Crytek figure out how to keep things financially stable and assign the necessary talent back to Crysis 4 and we get good news sometime in the not-too-distant future. Do you think there’s a way to keep staff employed? Sound off in the comments.
I created this website as I feel the state of the games industry and games reporting as a whole has gotten overly negative and full of clickbait. While I understand both of these are a great way to generate engagement, it’s a detriment to those gamers (like myself) that are just trying to enjoy games and not have to worry about the negativity of the current state of the gaming industry. I want a space where gamers can come for unbiased news that doesn’t rely on clickbait or rumours with a dash of humour and have the opportunity to share their passion for games.
