Two FPS Classics, Heretic & Hexen, Return To Modern Platforms
Classic 90’s FPS titles Heretic and Hexen return to our screens as part of a bundle announced at QuakeCon 2025. And to round off the good news, it's just been shadow dropped on all major platforms.
Nightdive Studios, the incredibly talented developers behind many remakes, remasters, and reboots, once again being their expertise to another pair of long-dormant classics, Heretic and Hexen. The original Raven Software classics have been bundled together as Heretic + Hexen and feature an abundance of action for the low price of €14.99 or your regional equivalent. The collection is also available on Xbox Game Pass and it's PC version.
As part of the new re-release, players get access to multiple titles and additional episodes, including:
Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders
Heretic: Faith Renewed
Hexen: Beyond Heretic
Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel
Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur
It's interesting to note that Heretic Faith Renewed and Hexen Vestiges of Grandeur are two new episodes created in collaboration between id Software and Nightdive Studios.
To go along with all that goodness, the two games get a bunch of new quality of life features to make the games feel at home on current hardware. Overall performance has seen a boost, with up to 4K resolution and 120 FPS on supported hardware. This goes along nicely with the improved textures, to make the games look a little more modern, kinda how our rose-tinted glasses make older games look in our minds.
Similar to the recent DOOM + DOOM II remasters, you can play with the original soundtracks, or you can try out a new remixed soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult who did the aforementioned remixed soundtrack. New mod support for Heretic + Hexen lets players play through the titles with community-published mods, and if they're anything like the mods for DOOM + DOOM II, you'll have a lot of interesting options to choose from.
If you're interested in trying the games out in multiplayer, Heretic + Hexen features local split-screen for up to 4 or 8 players, depending on platforms, and online crossplay multiplayer support for up to 16 players. Rounding out the noteworthy features is a bunch of behind-the-scenes content, giving players a look at the development journey behind Heretic + Hexen.
Heretic + Hexen is available today for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Steam, GOG, and cloud streaming services.
I created this website as I feel the state of the games industry and games reporting as a whole has gotten overly negative and full of clickbait. While I understand both of these are a great way to generate engagement, it’s a detriment to those gamers (like myself) that are just trying to enjoy games and not have to worry about the negativity of the current state of the gaming industry. I want a space where gamers can come for unbiased news that doesn’t rely on clickbait or rumours with a dash of humour and have the opportunity to share their passion for games.
